Frequently Asked Questions

Overview

What are SmartLinks?

The SmartLinks system intelligently understands the context of web pages you view. It helps you discover new things by automatically inserting additional links (called “SmartLinks”) to relevant, quality content. SmartLinks are visually unobtrusive, and do not pop-up windows or ads on the page.

For an overview you can read more About #{product_name}.

How are SmartLinks helpful?

Think about how many times you have been reading content online and wanted to know more about a particular topic or person. SmartLinks addresses this by automatically inserting contextual links to the most relevant and popular content online. SmartLinks saves you the hassle of hunting for additional information via a search engine, thereby allowing you to browse easier and learn more, faster.

SmartLinks link to quality content including Wikipedia, National Geographic, Health.com, Rollingstone, ESPN and the NY Times. We are continuously expanding the catalog of content and sites that we link to.

SmartLinks and Add-on Partners

Why am I seeing SmartLinks?

SmartLinks is currently included as a feature in some browser add-ons. If you installed (or upgraded) one of these add-ons, you would have then been presented with a window asking if you also wanted to try SmartLinks. If you clicked the "Yes, please" or "Accept" button, then SmartLinks would be enabled.

SmartLinks is opt-in only, and is never enabled without your explicit consent. If you did not mean to accept SmartLinks or no longer want SmartLinks, you can either disable or remove SmartLinks from the Firefox "Tools" menu (see related questions below).

What if I just want the add-on's functionality without SmartLinks?

SmartLinks is completely optional. You do not need to accept or enable SmartLinks for any of our partner add-ons to work.

When prompted at install or upgrade, simply click "No, thanks" or "Decline" when SmartLinks asks you if you would like to use it.

How does SmartLinks make money?

A small percentage of our links (currently less than 2%) are sponsored. For example, a publisher that has a site about bicycle safety might decide to sponsor links related to bicycle safety. We carefully vet our sponsored link partners.

Any sponsored proceeds are shared with our add-on partners to support the continued development of their add-on.

Can I sign up to sponsor links?

We are only working with select publishers of premium content. Please email us at bizdev@getsmartlinks.com to see if you qualify.

Functionality

How does SmartLinks work?

When you visit some pages, the SmartLinks system visits those pages in parallel and analyzes the content using our patent-pending semantic analysis engine. If we find high quality content in our catalog that is relevant to the context of the page being viewed, we insert links while you are still viewing the page.

Does SmartLinks change links on the pages I visit?

No. SmartLinks does not change any existing links on your page. It only adds new links to text that is currently not linked.

How many SmartLinks are added to each page?

We are currently adding on average four links per page.

Can I disable or remove SmartLinks?

Absolutely. To turn SmartLinks on or off, simply check or uncheck the "Enable SmartLinks" option in the Tools → SmartLinks browser menu.

If you have trouble finding the Tools menu on Windows 7 or Vista press the Alt key.

To completely remove SmartLinks select 'Remove' in the same menu.

Will SmartLinks still run after I disable or remove it?

No, SmartLinks will not run after it is disabled or removed.

Will SmartLinks slow downloading my web pages?

No. SmartLinks does not extend the time it takes to download your web pages. SmartLinks only analyzes the page and inserts links after the page has finished loading.

  • SmartLinks does not analyze any secure (https) pages, such as banking sites.
  • SmartLinks does not access any password protected content, such as that on web mail or social networking sites.
  • SmartLinks is not enabled if your browser is in "private browsing mode".

Is SmartLinks "Spyware"?

No. Spyware by definition attempts to install itself without informing users. SmartLinks believes in complete transparency. We work with our partners to inform users via their website and other means about SmartLinks' inclusion and functionality.

SmartLinks is also opt-in only, meaning we ask users permission before SmartLinks is enabled. If you do not accept this opt-in, SmartLinks will not be enabled.

Is SmartLinks "Adware"?

No. SmartLinks does not deliver ads (pop-ups, banners, text ads, etc).

As mentioned above, a small percentage of our links are sponsored by premium publishers who want to sponsor a link to their content.

Is SmartLinks "Malware"?

No. SmartLinks does not harm nor attempt to access your computer in any malicious manner.
